After taking the steps of following your curiosity, identifying a niche and interviewing your potential customers, you can begin the process of testing your market for interest.
4. Test Your Market Before You Invest Heavily
By “pre-selling” your program, product or service, you are able to make sure there is demand before you spend time creating it. For example, if you want to offer an in-person workshop you can pre-sell registrations using a platform like EventBrite. Or offer short, free trainings to gauge interest, then ask your audience to sign up immediately (at a discount) for future trainings.
If you have expertise in a subject other pharmacists would find interesting or helpful, you can create and teach a workshop. Myself and two colleagues offer an MTM Enhancement workshop in Arkansas that has filled a need and received great feedback from community pharmacists.
A workshop can be a good, replicable income stream for the entrepreneurial pharmacist. It takes work, but once you develop the presentation, objectives and a general outline, you can offer the workshop as many times as there is interest.
Remember, I recommend you first “test-sell” your workshop on Facebook, EventBrite, in your local paper or through your state APhA chapter to see if people in your area would sign up.
