I am excited to share a service that I am very passionate about: medication synchronization programs. Here's a great program if you want to get started with implementing a Med Sync program.
What is Simplify My Meds?
It is a solution that helps community pharmacies implement a medication synchronization program.
How/why was it created?
It is a program created by the National Community Pharmacists Association that provides an simple step-by-step procedure for pharmacies looking to start a med sync program. It is a free service for NCPA members.
How does it help the independent community pharmacy owner?
Simplify My Meds® helps pharmacists consolidate and coordinate a patient's prescriptions so they can all be refilled on the same day each month, improving patient adherence and revolutionizing pharmacy operations.
Data shows that pharmacies that implement medication synchronization program results in more refills in addition to better patient outcomes. Using NCPA's handy Medication Synchronization Revenue Calculator, based on the "Thrifty White" study by Virginia Commonwealth University you can estimate the increased amount of revenue you may see from implementation of med sync.
Ex.) You have 200 patients on med sync, average of 2.8 more refills per year, average number of meds on sync program 4.65, and the average blended retail cost of $61, the potential increase in revenue is $34,160.
It is also a great conversation starter with physicians/clinics in your area. It may even open channels for additional clinical services and collaborative practice agreements.
Is it software, one on one help or other?
It is a system that comes with forms and a plan for setting up Med Sync. It also provides suggestions for best practices.
Services like Simplify My Meds® are important for independent community pharmacies because they provide good customer service. A high level of patient care can set the independent apart from chain retail stores.
According to the NCPA website, “Some pharmacies have seen as much as a 30% increase in prescriptions and revenue from their synchronized patients, and patients love the convenience and personalized service this program provides.”
Do they have a training program to help maximize feature use?
NCPA members who sign up for Simplify My Meds® receive a detailed operations manual, training materials, and a FREE starter kit of marketing materials.
In addition, they have a handy "Prescriber Detailing" tip sheet. It breaks down step-by-step the process of getting a foot in the door and also making the pitch.
They also share a ton of great information and videos on their Facebook page.
Can you DIY a Med Sync program?
Of course, or you could even hire an independent consultant to help you set it up. Many pharmacies will use a simply calendar and folder system to keep track of what maintenance meds need filled and on which days.
